Η Δρ. Ζαχαρίου επικεντρώθηκε στις μελέτες που έγιναν στο εργαστήριό της, μαζύ με την ομάδα της, συγκεκριμένα επάνω στο θέμα της συσχέτισης χρόνιου πόνου και κατάθλιψης.
Στην σημαντική αυτή μελέτη έλαβαν μέρος ποντικοί. Οι ποντικοί κατ'αρχάς είχαν κάποια βλάβη στο περιφερικό νευρολογικό σύστημα και με την επίμονη συνέχεια του πόνου,

Το συμπέρασμα της όλης μελέτης υποστηρίζει πως ο χρόνιος πόνος εκπυρσοκροτεί προσαρμοστικές αλλαγές στις περιοχές του εγκεφάλου που συνδέονται με την κατάθλιψη και το άγχος.
Η Δρ. Ζαχαρίου και η ομάδα ερευνητών ευελπιστούν πως η όλη αυτή μελέτη θα είναι σημαντική στην εφεύρεση καλύτερων φαρμάκων για τα άτομα που υποφέρουν από χρόνιο πόνο.

On Tuesday, April 4, Dr. Venetia Zachariou was the highly distinguished guest on the Mount Sinai Medical Show, hosted by Fay Kozas.
Dr. Zachariou discussed the studies that she and her team have conducted in her lab, focusing on the link between chronic pain and depression.
The subjects in this significant study were mice with pre-existing damage to the peripheral nervous system. The studies showed that as a result of
the persistent chronic pain due to the damage, the mice began to exhibit symptoms of depression and anxiety similar to those that present in humans.
In conclusion, the study found that chronic pain can induce adaptive changes in the regions of the brain that are linked to depression and anxiety.
Dr. Zachariou and her team are hopeful that this study will lead to the invention of better drugs for all those who suffer from chronic pain.
