Την Τρίτη, 14 Νοεμβρίου, εκλεκτός καλεσμένος στην εκπομπή του Νοσοκομείου Mount
Sinai με την Φαίη Κοζά ήταν ο παγκοσμίως διακεκριμένος χειρουργός Dr. Peter Henderson.
Ο γιατρός επικεντρώθηκε σε ένα θέμα πρωτότυπο, σαν ταινία επιστημονικής φαντασίας,
αφού μίλησε για την μεταμόσχευση άκρων, όπως βραχίονες και πόδια. Συνήθως η
απώλεια άκρων οφείλεται σε τραυματισμό στο πεδίο μάχης ή σε τροχαίο ή και σε λοίμωξη όπως ο
στρεπτόκκοκος. Ο γιατρός αναφέρθηκε επίσης στις ψυχολογικές και κοινωνικές
επιπτώσεις. Ενθαρρυντικό είναι πως οι μεταμοσχεύσεις άκρων μέχρι στιγμής έχουν μεγάλη
επιτυχία, κάτι που υπόσχεται πολλά για τα άτομα που έχουν χάσει κάποιο άκρο.

The doctor spoke about arm and leg transplantations, a field of medicine that may sound like science-fiction. Usually, limb loss can result from
explosive devices, car accidents, or a streptococcus infection. The doctor also discussed the psychological and social effects. It is
encouraging that the arm and leg transplantations thus far have been successful, giving much hope to all those who have lost limbs.

Dr. Henderson is Assistant Professor of
Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
